
How do I get rid of smoke smell in my house?
Find the source first, then clean the surfaces holding it. Smoke odor is residue soaked into walls and fabric, not particles. That is why a filter clears the haze and not the smell. Two exceptions come first: rotten eggs means gas, so leave on foot and call 911 from outside, and burning plastic at an outlet needs a qualified electrician.
A burning smell with no fire: two cases that come before any cleaning
A burning smell with no fire, and one smell that is not smoke at all, come before any cleaning. Rotten eggs or sulfur, or a hissing sound, is natural gas rather than smoke. The California Public Utilities Commission's instruction is specific: leave the area on foot, then call 911 or your gas utility from outside.
Do not light a match. Do not turn anything electrical on or off. Do not use a phone inside. Do not touch a valve or try to find the leak. Knock on a neighbor's door with your hand instead of ringing the bell.
Burning plastic at an outlet or a switch is the other one. The Consumer Product Safety Commission lists that smell as a sign of an electrical system problem, along with a face plate that is hot to the touch, flickering lights, and circuits that stop working. It says to have a qualified electrician find the cause rather than opening it up yourself. The same publication adds one scoping detail. In homes wired with aluminum branch circuits, common in construction from the mid 1960s to the mid 1970s, connections have been reported to fail and overheat with no prior indication at all. A smell is a sign worth acting on, and its absence is not proof that nothing is wrong.
Carbon monoxide is not on this list, because it has no smell at all. An alarm is the only thing that finds it, and nothing on this page will warn you about it. If your home has any fuel-burning appliance or an attached garage and no working carbon monoxide alarm, buy one today. If an alarm sounds, or more than one person feels sick at once, get everyone outside and call 911.
Then work out which smoke you actually have
Six different sources produce the same complaint, and each one has a different answer.
Smoke that came in from outside during a fire. Keeping a house sealed and filtered during an active smoke event, and dealing with the ash left behind afterward, is a separate job with its own protocol, covered on the wildfire smoke page. Come back here for the odor that is still there weeks later.
A fireplace, wood stove, or chimney. EPA's instruction for this is direct. If you smell smoke in your home, shut the wood-burning appliance down, open a window, and check that the flue is open. Check the venting system carefully, then call a wood stove installer or a chimney sweep. Chimney cracks let smoke into the house, which is one of the things an annual inspection looks for. There is a free check you can run yourself first: about twenty minutes after a fire is lit, go outside and look up at the chimney. Visible smoke means wet wood, not enough air to the fire, or a stove and chimney that need service.
Tobacco or cigarette smoke left by a previous occupant. This one has a completely different answer from the rest, because it is a deposit on surfaces rather than something in the air. That is a cleaning and sealing job, covered below.
A neighbor, a shared wall, or a shared duct. Smoke arrives through an opening, so the job is finding it: shared wall cavities, plumbing and wiring penetrations, unsealed outlet boxes, a shared return, gaps around a dryer vent. Close the path rather than treating the air. Filtration in the room you sleep in helps while it runs.
Cooking, or something scorched. A burner, an oven, or a pan puts combustion products right where you breathe, and the fix is ventilation during and after, which the gas stove page covers properly.
The heating and cooling system moving it around. A furnace that has sat all summer burns dust off its heat exchanger the first time it runs in the fall, and that smell normally clears on its own within the first run or two. If it keeps coming back, stop treating it as a smell. Shut the system down, check that your carbon monoxide alarm works, and have the furnace and its venting inspected. EPA's standing advice is to have any fuel-burning furnace, stove, or fireplace inspected and serviced before each heating season to protect against carbon monoxide poisoning. A system running through a house with residue in it will spread the odor rather than create it.
One more cause is not a house problem at all. If you are the only person who smells it, and it follows you from room to room, the smell may not be in the house. NIDCD calls that phantosmia, the sensation of an odor that is not there, and its advice for any smell disorder is to talk with your doctor. No amount of cleaning changes that one.
A musty or earthy smell is a different problem with a different fix. That is damp and microbial growth, not smoke, and it points at finding water rather than removing residue.
Why the smell outlasts the smoke, and why a filter does not fix it
Smoke is two things at once, gases and fine particles, which is EPA's own description of it. Those two halves behave differently once they are inside your house, and nearly every bad piece of smoke-odor advice comes from treating them as one thing.
The particles settle out or get filtered. The gas half does not. Tobacco smoke carries both volatile and semivolatile compounds. The semivolatile fraction causes the lingering problem: at ordinary indoor temperatures those compounds sit in the air and on the surfaces at the same time. Researchers describe the physical and chemical changes involved as running from seconds to months. Drywall, paint, carpet, upholstery, curtains, and everything in your closets take them up and then release them again.
That is what a smoke smell is, and it explains the shape of the timeline. Researchers instrumented one heavily smoke-impacted home after a wildland-urban-interface fire. Indoor volatile organic compounds declined slowly across roughly five weeks, starting ten days after the fire, and reached about 20 percent of the level they started at. The authors are explicit that this is a single house, and that a building with different materials and a different air exchange rate can run on a different clock. The decline was slow because the building kept feeding it. The reservoirs are not only on the surfaces, they are inside the materials, which is also why the smell rises and falls with conditions in the room rather than fading on a straight line.
A HEPA filter is a particle device. Gas molecules pass straight through the fibers, which is why a room can be measurably clean and still smell like a campfire. That is a statement about smell, not about health. EPA's position is that the biggest health threat from smoke is the fine particles, and those are exactly what a HEPA filter removes. Keep it running. It is just not the tool for the odor.
Activated carbon is the media that adsorbs the gas fraction. How much it removes depends on how much carbon is actually in the unit. Read the spec sheet for weight of media in pounds rather than for the word HEPA. Carbon does better on the heavier aromatic compounds in smoke than on the small light ones like formaldehyde. It also saturates and stops adsorbing, and a saturated bed can slowly give back what it held, so an old carbon filter can make the smell worse rather than better. Replace it on a schedule measured in months rather than years.
In that same house, researchers tested two fixes. Air cleaners with activated carbon, and opening windows to exchange indoor air with outdoor air, each cut average indoor volatile organic compound levels by more than half while they were running. One house is one house, so treat the size of the drop as an indication rather than a number to plan around. The part that generalizes is the phrase while running. Filtering and airing out suppress the smell while they run. They do not empty the reservoir.
What actually removes smoke smell: the source, then the surfaces
Nothing you do to the air holds until the source is gone. A fireplace drafting backward, someone still smoking, a neighbor's smoke coming through a shared wall: cleaning against any of those is a treadmill. Close the path first.
Then the surfaces. Textiles are the practical place to start, because you can wash or replace them and you cannot wash a wall. Curtains, bedding, cushion covers, washable upholstery, and clothing that lived in the room get dealt with before you buy any equipment. Researchers have not ranked household materials against each other. They have found deep reservoirs in hard materials too, including the gypsum core of drywall. Do not read that order as a ranking of how much each one holds.
For hard surfaces there is a measured answer, and it asks more than most advice admits. In a randomized study of tobacco residue in homes, dry or damp cleaning alone and wet cleaning alone each showed limited benefit. Used in combination, they cut surface nicotine by 43 percent immediately afterward and by 53 percent three months later. Dust nicotine dropped 60 percent immediately and was back at pre-cleaning levels by three months. Those figures track nicotine, which researchers use as a stand-in for the whole residue. They are the best measured evidence available, and they are not a direct measure of how much less you will smell. The authors' conclusion is the sentence worth keeping: cleaning reduced but did not permanently remove the residue. This is a protocol you repeat.
The tobacco timelines follow from the same reservoir behavior. Homes of smokers who quit but stayed remained polluted for the full six months researchers followed them. Surface nicotine dropped once in the first week and then held flat. Nicotine in dust did not drop at all. Homes that smokers moved out of still carried residue after sitting vacant for two months and being cleaned and prepared for new residents. If you bought a house from a smoker, you are not waiting out a smell. You are removing a deposit.
Sealing and repainting is the trade's last step. Nobody has published a number for how much odor a stain-blocking primer holds back, so treat it as what you do after cleaning stops making progress, not as a substitute for cleaning.
Ductwork is where the money usually goes and usually should not. EPA does not recommend routine duct cleaning and states that duct cleaning has never been shown to prevent health problems. Its own triggers are substantial visible mold inside the ducts, vermin, ducts clogged with excessive dust and debris, or particles actually coming out of the supply registers. Odor is not on that list. EPA also says the cause has to be corrected first or the problem will likely recur. It says no chemical biocides are registered for use inside internally-insulated ducts, which is worth knowing before anyone offers to sanitize and deodorize the system after a fire. Change the filter, run the fan, and look at the ducts only if one of those three conditions is true.
One carve-out. If a fire burned close enough to deposit ash on your property, the ducts are a different case. Ash settles inside them and keeps re-entering the air every time the system runs, which is a debris problem rather than an odor problem. There the ducts, the attic, and the roof are worth a professional cleaning rather than a weekend.
What does not work, including the one everybody buys
Ozone generators are marketed harder for smoke odor than for anything else, and EPA's document on them is specific. At concentrations that do not exceed public health standards, ozone is not effective at removing many odor-causing chemicals. EPA cites experiments suggesting body odor may be masked by the smell of ozone, and is not removed by it. In another, ozone was mixed with chemicals coming off a new carpet. It did reduce many of them, including the ones producing the odor. It also produced a variety of aldehydes, so the total concentration of organic chemicals in the air went up rather than down. EPA also states that ozone generators are not effective at removing carbon monoxide or formaldehyde.
The common advice to turn the machine down when you can smell the ozone fails on its own terms. EPA notes that the ability to detect ozone by smell varies from person to person and deteriorates rapidly once you are breathing it, so a lack of odor does not guarantee that levels are safe.
A salesperson will raise this. High ozone concentrations in unoccupied spaces are sometimes used to decontaminate a building, fire restoration among them. EPA acknowledges that, and notes that little is known about the byproducts left behind. That is a controlled process in an empty structure, not a consumer box running in a room where someone lives. If a restoration contractor proposes it, ask what happens to the byproducts and how long the house has to stay empty afterward. Those two answers are what separate a controlled process from a gadget. California requires indoor air-cleaning devices sold in the state to be certified against an ozone-emission limit, which takes ozone generators off the shelf there.
Masking is the other half of the problem. No smell cancels another smell; you get both. Scented candles, plug-ins, and citrus or pine cleaners release terpenes, and California's air regulator states that ozone reacts with terpenes to produce toxic byproducts including formaldehyde. Indoor air chemistry work finds the same reaction also makes fresh airborne particles. A burning candle is a combustion particle source in its own right. That is a chemistry problem stacked on top of an odor problem.
Charcoal bags, salt lamps, and the passive absorber gadgets sold for exactly this show no meaningful particle removal in residential conditions, and nobody has shown they do anything measurable for odor either. The problem is not the carbon, it is the arrangement: a bag on a shelf holds a few ounces where a real filter holds pounds, and nothing pushes room air through it. The thing in your house that genuinely absorbs smoke is the house, which is why the work is cleaning it rather than shopping.
