Is air duct cleaning worth it?
Usually not. EPA says duct cleaning has never been shown to prevent health problems and does not recommend it routinely. It names three cases where cleaning is warranted: substantial visible mold inside the ducts, a vermin infestation, or ducts so clogged that debris blows out of the supply registers. Check for those before you spend, and decline any biocide or sealant offered alongside.
Never shown to prevent health problems: EPA's standing position
Duct cleaning has never been shown to actually prevent health problems. That sentence is not a competitor's swipe or a contrarian blog post. It is the US Environmental Protection Agency's, published on its standing guidance page about residential duct cleaning (EPA 402-K-97-002), and it has held as the agency's position for years. The same page sets the operating rule in nine words: EPA does not recommend that air ducts be cleaned routinely, but only as needed.
Hold those two sentences against the way the service is sold and the gap is the whole story. The industry pitch is maintenance, a visit every year or two, like an oil change, justified by health. EPA's guidance supports neither half. No study has demonstrated the health benefit, and no schedule exists, because routine is exactly the word the agency declines to attach.
A fair reading matters here, because the agency is not saying the service is harmful, and it is not saying ducts never need cleaning. It names specific conditions where cleaning is warranted, and outside them the benefit a flyer promises has simply never been demonstrated. For a service sold on health grounds, that absence is the load-bearing fact. The health claim is the reason you would pay.
Two structural details finish the picture. EPA sets no standards for duct cleaning and certifies no duct-cleaning companies, so there is no federal seal for a company to earn, whatever the website badge implies. And the agency is blunt about the sales channel itself: do not hire anyone who sells duct cleaning as routine maintenance or claims a health benefit for it. Applied literally, that one rule disqualifies most of the coupons that prompt the search.
Worth it, then, only on those conditions.
Visible mold, vermin, or blowing debris: when is cleaning warranted?
EPA names exactly three conditions that justify a duct cleaning, and every one of them is checkable before money moves. In the agency's own words: substantial visible mold growth inside hard surface (e.g., sheet metal) ducts or on other components of your heating and cooling system; ducts infested with vermin, e.g. rodents or insects; and ducts clogged with excessive amounts of dust and debris and/or particles actually released into the home from your supply registers.
Take mold first, since it is the worry that drives the most searching. The check costs a screwdriver and a flashlight: unscrew a supply register, the vent grille that blows air into a room, and look at the duct interior and any system components you can see. EPA's qualifiers are substantial and visible. A film of gray dust is not growth. If you do see growth, you do not need a lab to confirm the decision, because EPA's mold guidance says that in most cases, where visible mold growth is present, sampling is unnecessary.
The material under the growth changes the job. Hard sheet metal can be cleaned. Insulated duct liner that got wet or grew mold cannot be cleaned at all; it comes out and gets replaced. And the growth itself is a symptom. EPA reports condensation on or near the cooling coils as a major factor in moisture contamination of these systems, and its rule for every mold problem applies inside ductwork too: leave the moisture condition uncorrected and the growth comes back. A cleaning without a moisture fix is a subscription.
Vermin is the least ambiguous of the three. Rodents or insects in the ductwork, announced by droppings, nesting material, or the animals themselves, warrant a cleaning on their own.
The third condition has a visible test built into its wording: excessive dust and debris, or particles actually released from the supply registers. Puffs of dust when the system kicks on, or debris collecting at the register, is that condition. Dust you only find by opening the duct is not.
When the finding is genuinely unclear, an assessment with no cleaning attached is worth more than a second cleaning quote. We do not clean, service, or inspect ductwork, and what you pay us for is the measurement, whatever it turns up.
Biocides and sealants: the two add-ons to turn down
Two add-ons ride along with duct cleanings, chemical biocides and interior sealants, and EPA has cautionary language for both in place of an endorsement. A biocide here means a chemical applied inside the ducts to kill mold and bacteria; ozone, a reactive gas sold for the same job, draws the same treatment in the guidance.
On the killing chemicals, EPA's page says little research has been conducted to demonstrate the effectiveness of most biocides and ozone when used inside ducts. It then adds the other side of the ledger: some people may react negatively to the biocide or ozone, causing adverse health reactions. Undemonstrated upside, named downside. That is a poor trade at any price, and it is being offered as an upgrade. There is also a regulatory fact worth carrying into the conversation: no chemical biocides are registered, meaning approved for that specific use under federal pesticide law, for application inside internally insulated ducts.
Sealants get their own warning. These are coatings sprayed onto the inside of ducts to encapsulate the surface or lock down loosened insulation fibers. EPA's language: questions about the safety, effectiveness and overall desirability of sealants remain. And more pointedly, little is known about the potential toxicity of these products under typical use conditions or in the event they catch fire. Read that plainly. It is a permanent coating, of unknown toxicity in a house fire, applied to the pipes that feed air to every room you live in, and the agency that would vouch for it has declined to.
These add-ons appear mid-job rather than in the ad for a reason. The crew is already at the house and the ducts are already open, so the sanitize-and-seal offer is priced against a trip you have already paid for instead of against its own value. While-we-are-in-here is how a low advertised price becomes a real ticket. The counter is procedural, not confrontational: get the full scope in writing before the truck arrives, and decline anything sprayed, fogged, or coated onto the inside of the ducts.
A weak vacuum makes the air worse
An inadequate vacuum collection system can release more dust, dirt and other contaminants than if you had left the ducts alone. That warning is EPA's, from the same guidance page, and it is the sentence that turns a bad purchase into a harmful one. Most wasted home spending buys nothing. This buys a downgrade.
The mechanism is simple once the job is split into its two halves. A duct cleaning is agitation plus collection. Brushes and compressed air knock loose what years of operation left settled on the duct walls, and the vacuum system exists to capture everything the agitation frees. When collection cannot keep pace, the difference goes airborne, distributed to every room the next time the blower runs. Dust that had settled was staying put. Suspended, it is what you breathe. The same job that was pointless with a good vacuum becomes actively bad with a poor one.
That asymmetry is why equipment, not effort, is the thing to ask about. The service lives or dies on the collection side: gear that captures what the brushes free rather than exhausting it back into the house. A truck-mounted or otherwise serious vacuum setup and a mail-coupon price rarely appear in the same driveway. A price too low to cover a crew, real equipment, and the hours the work takes exists to get a technician to your door. The biocide and sealant offers then build the real bill.
Two questions in writing separate the tiers before anyone touches a register. What is the collection equipment, and how does captured debris leave the house? A company doing the job properly answers both without friction. A company that changes the subject to sanitizing has answered them too.
One reframe helps the decision hold under sales pressure. The coupon price is not a discount on the good service. It is the full price of a different service, one whose collection half is where the cost was cut, and EPA's warning is precisely that the two are not the same product.
Why is the house dusty? Start at the filter, not the ducts
A MERV-13 furnace filter, MERV being the rating scale for how fine a particle a filter catches, removes 80 to 90 percent of fine particles from the air it moves, every hour the fan runs. That standing capture is what actually controls the dust and allergen load of a house, and it is the spend the duct-cleaning coupon is quietly competing against.
The itch that sent you searching is real. Dust that returns days after cleaning, a smell when the system starts, allergies that flare indoors. The ducts are the least likely author of all three. Dust is a filtration story: a bargain fiberglass panel exists to protect the equipment and passes fine particles straight back to the rooms, so the upgrade that changes what you wipe off the shelves is the filter rating, not the duct interior. A smell from the vents when the cooling starts usually traces to moisture at the cooling coil rather than to the duct run. Measurement settles the rest. A week of particle readings shows whether the dust in your air is elevated at all, and when it spikes, which is what points at a source instead of a symptom. - Unscrew one supply register and look inside with a flashlight before accepting any quote. You are looking for substantial visible growth, droppings, or heavy debris, not a film of dust.
- Check your furnace filter's rating and condition before you blame the ducts.
- Watch a register when the system kicks on. Debris actually blowing into the room is the condition that justifies a cleaning; dust that stays put is not.
- Get any cleaner's full scope in writing before the visit, and decline biocides, ozone treatments, and sealants by name.
- If you found mold, fix the moisture first. A cleaning ahead of the water fix buys a repeat.

Its useful output is a specific one: which, if any, of EPA's three conditions your ducts actually meet. That framing protects you, because an inspection sold as a free teaser for a cleaning has its conclusion written in advance.
