HEPA vs MERV is not an either-or choice. A true HEPA purifier captures 99.97 percent of particles at the hardest size to catch, but only in the room it runs in. A MERV 13 furnace filter treats the whole house whenever the fan runs, at lower per-pass efficiency on the finest particles. The strongest particle setup is both: MERV 13 in the HVAC, a HEPA in the bedroom.
How they differ
Both trap particles by pulling air through a mat of fibers, so the split is not the physics but the efficiency rating, the coverage, and how the air gets through. HEPA is a sealed appliance: a fan forces all of the room's air through a dense pleated medium, and the medium has to catch all but a few of every ten thousand particles at 0.3 microns, the size filters find hardest to catch. A MERV rating grades the media's fractional efficiency instead. MERV 13, the practical ceiling for a home HVAC system, catches at least 50 percent of particles in the 0.3 to 1.0 micron band and at least 85 percent from 1.0 to 3.0 microns per the EPA. - You will run the fan in continuous mode so the filter cleans full-time, not only when the system cycles.
What it costs, roughly
Treat these as approximate market ranges, not quotes. A MERV 13 furnace filter is the cheapest particle upgrade in the house: a low double-digit-dollar pleated 1-inch filter you change roughly quarterly, or a pricier 4-inch media cartridge that holds more and stretches the interval. A 1-inch MERV 13 clogs faster than a cheap filter, and a clogged filter starves airflow, so the change cadence is part of the cost. A true HEPA room purifier is a larger upfront buy and is priced per room by its clean-air delivery rate, plus periodic filter replacement. The honest math: MERV 13 buys whole-house coverage cheaply, a HEPA unit buys top efficiency in one room, and running both is still modest next to the health payload of cleaner particle air.
