How do you remove heavy metals from your body?
Your body already removes heavy metals once exposure stops: most arsenic leaves in urine within days, and lead exits blood over about a month. Methylmercury takes roughly two to four months. No over-the-counter product speeds any of that up, and FDA has approved none for the purpose. The lever that works is finding where the metal gets in, usually water, old paint, or fish, and cutting it off.
Most arsenic is out of your body within days
Wanting a heavy metal out of your body is the right instinct, and for the most common of the water metals it happens faster than almost anyone guesses. ATSDR, the federal Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry, puts it plainly: most inorganic arsenic is gone within several days, carried out in urine, though some remains in the body for several months or longer.
The machinery is not a program you start. Your kidneys route absorbed arsenic into urine mainly within one to two days of exposure, which is exactly why a urine test is the accepted measure of recent arsenic exposure, and why the same test says little about last year. Nothing sold in a detox aisle initiates this. It was running before you searched.
The real question is why a metal builds up at all if removal is this fast. The answer sits at the other end of the pipe: a clearance clock only wins if the intake has stopped.
The slower clocks: lead, methylmercury, and the 94 percent in bone
Lead's half-life in adult blood, the time for half of it to clear, is about 28 days; the estimates ATSDR cites run 28 to 36 days. On the clock alone, a single exposure works its way out of your blood within a few months.
Bone is the complication, and it deserves to be said without softening. The bones and teeth of adults hold about 94 percent of their total lead burden, roughly 73 percent in children, and ATSDR notes that under certain circumstances that stored lead leaves bone and re-enters the blood. Effects can surface with no current exposure at all, because the skeleton acts as an internal source. A month-long half-life and a decades-long reservoir are both true of the same metal.
Methylmercury, the organic form of mercury that accumulates in fish, is the slowest of the three. It leaves the body over several months, mostly in feces, and ATSDR's 2024 toxicological profile puts the terminal half-time at 50 to 130 days, call it two to four months.
For all three metals, these clocks start only after exposure stops.
Where the metals get in: tap water, pre-1978 paint, and fish
Arsenic's days, lead's month, and methylmercury's two to four months all measure clearance once intake stops; while a source keeps feeding you, blood levels hold. ATSDR's lead-management guidance is built on that fact: the point of monitoring is to identify the source and to verify the decline in blood lead after the sources have been reduced or eliminated. Source off, curve down. No product substitutes for that step.
Most searching in this territory reaches for the word toxins. The move that changes your options is trading that word for names, because a named pollutant has a test and a number where a vague one has only products.
Drinking water is the route you can put a number on this week. Old paint is a check on the house rather than on you: interior lead paint was not federally banned until 1978, so painted layers in homes older than that can carry it. And the mercury that matters is a menu question, not a tap question. Do over-the-counter detox and chelation products work?
FDA has never approved any chelation product for over-the-counter use, for any health condition. Chelation drugs, medicines that bind metal ions so the body can excrete them, are prescription-only in every approved form, because FDA holds they can only be used safely under a practitioner's supervision.
The risk side is not theoretical paperwork. FDA warns that chelation can cause dehydration, kidney failure, and death, and its judgment on the over-the-counter versions is unusually direct: consumers who use them for detoxification take on all the risks of chelation, which FDA calls unacceptable given that there is no proof these products prevent or treat any condition or disease. It is a real drug with real hazards, an unproven benefit, and no supervision.
One more pattern from the same FDA page, and it matters to anyone comparing test kits: many of the companies that received warning letters for unapproved chelation products also promote home test kits, marketed to diagnose metal toxicity and steer the buyer toward the product. FDA notes those kits are not cleared and may return false or misleading results. The test exists to sell you the product.
Cleanses and detox diets rest on thinner ground still. The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health, NIH's arm for evaluating this category, cites a 2015 review that found no compelling research supporting detox diets for weight management or for clearing the body of what they promise to clear.
None of that makes the worry behind the purchase silly. It means the products answer it badly, at real risk, while the working system goes unused.
When is chelation therapy the right treatment?
Chelation therapy is real medicine with a defined lane. NIH's summary is that CDC recommends it for removing toxic metals from the body in some specific serious cases, and for lead, ATSDR's clinical guidance calls it a mainstay of managing children whose blood lead exceeds 45 micrograms per deciliter, written 45 µg/dL on a lab report, used with caution and with a physician experienced in lead toxicity consulted first.
Every word of that lane starts from a measurement. The entry point is a blood or urine level ordered by a clinician, never a symptom checklist, and one test deserves refusal by name: the provoked or chelation-challenge urine test, where a dose of chelator is given before sampling so the reading comes back inflated. ATSDR is unambiguous that chelation challenge to detect or monitor lead toxicity is not recommended and may harm the patient. A clinic that leads with one is running the sales pattern from the previous section in medical dress.
Your levels belong to you and a clinician, answered in blood and urine. Your sources belong to the house, answered at the tap and in the paint layers, each as a specific number from a certified laboratory. The body clears; what it cannot do is out-clear a source that is still running. Testing your home finds the source, and shutting it off is the only removal step with a mechanism behind it.
