Does where you live change how much vitamin D your skin can make?

The gate is how high the sun gets, not how bright the day looks. When the sun sits low its light takes a long slanted path through ozone, and ozone absorbs the exact wavelengths vitamin D synthesis depends on.

Latitude therefore sets the calendar. The study that established this tested four places and found the pattern cleanly: winter sunlight in Boston produced none, Edmonton further north went dark for longer, and Los Angeles and Puerto Rico ran year round.

So geography tells you when the reaction is available where you live. It still does not set anyone's minutes.

Does sunscreen stop your skin making vitamin D?

Where do I start?

  1. Drop the rule you arrived with. No single daily sun duration can be honest across people who differ this much.
  2. Read the UV Index as a clock rather than a score: when it crosses 3, when it peaks, and when it drops back. Protection starts at 3, and the hours outside that window are the gentler ones.
  3. Do not count time behind glass. The window seat and the car contribute nothing to this.
  4. Keep using sunscreen correctly. Correct use does not cost you synthesis, and skipping it for vitamin D buys you nothing.
  5. Separate the two questions you have probably merged: whether synthesis is possible where you are, and how much you personally need. Only the first has an answer.
  6. Take an actual vitamin D concern to a clinician. A trial dose is what a study administered to volunteers.
