Daylight does something real for how you feel, and less than the marketing around it claims. The solid part is physical: outdoor light at the eye runs about eightfold brighter than indoor light. The softer part is the effect. In the strongest trial, mood improved most in the nature group while all six cognitive measures came back null. Focus and productivity are not on the list.
Daylight and how you feel: what is it, and where does it come from?
What separates daylight from a bright room is the size of the gap, not any special property in the light. Measured at eye level, one field study put open outdoors at about 9,300 lux, shade under a large tree at about 1,580, rooms with windows at a few hundred, and a room lit by a single fixture at about 14. Pooled across settings, outdoors ran about eightfold brighter than indoors.
Those are published measurements rather than targets, and they are why an overcast morning outdoors still beats a well-lit room, and it is not close.
What the gap does not buy is a matching gap in performance. In 58 UK adults who wore wrist light sensors for a week and took repeated phone-based tests, each tenfold increase in the previous 30 minutes of light tracked with slightly lower sleepiness and slightly faster reaction time. Small effects, correlational, and the authors state plainly that the design cannot establish causality.
Daylight is a large, measurable input. What it does to a person still has to be tested rather than read off the brightness.
Daylight and how you feel: why does it matter?
Most people know the feeling of walking back inside in a better mood than they walked out in. The research mostly agrees with the feeling, and declines to agree with what gets built on top of it.
Start with the cleanest test. A randomised trial sent 188 people on a nature walk, a city walk, or an indoor treadmill; mood improved, and improved most in the nature group, while all six cognitive measures were null. Both halves are the finding.
The large cohorts point the same direction. Across more than 400,000 UK adults, each additional hour of daytime outdoor light was associated with lower odds of lifetime depression, less frequent tiredness, and an earlier body clock, though outdoor time was self-reported, which makes it a pattern and not a cause.
A cross-sectional analysis of 86,772 UK Biobank participants wearing wrist sensors, in an older group, found roughly 20 percent lower odds of depression in the highest daytime-light band and roughly 30 percent higher odds in the highest night-light band.
Then the boundary. A preregistered study of 775 people across 75 countries found strong evidence that time outdoors tracks with earlier sleep timing, fewer disturbances and less daytime impairment, and no conclusive evidence for morning lighting practices, daytime lighting practices, or evening light control, with both sides self-reported and cross-sectional.
Time outside earns its place on that record.

The paper itself reported slightly lower sleepiness and slightly faster reaction time after more recent light, called the effects small, and said it could not establish causality.
Same study, two different claims, and the louder one is the one that travels. We publish the gap between a paper and its promotion, because that gap is where this whole domain loses the plot.
